Description :
Vita brevis; ars longa; occasio celeris; experimentum periculosum; judicium difficile. - "Life is short; art is long; opportunity fugitive; judgment difficult." So begins one of the greatest works in the entire canon of western medical literature. Hippocrates practised on the Isle of Cos about 500 years before the birth of Christ at a time when medicine was beginning to sever its connection with religion and control by the priesthood. As Thomas Coar said in the introduction to his 1822 translation, "The Aphorisms, exhibiting the concentrated results of arduous observation and sagacious inference, are generally considered the most valuable production of their celebrated author". Hippocrates can be called the father of western scientific medicine. The aphorisms are printed in the original Greek, with Latin and English translation below. Film for this elegant volume was prepared from an original edition of 1822. Published in the "Classics of Medicine Library" series c1997. Leather binding. Gilded edges. 22 carat gold stamp on spine. Endleaves designed by Richard J Wolfe. Spine stamped in gold. Design of the edition by Daniel B Bianchi and Selma Ordewer. 314 pages. Colour plate at front.
